語源
「prefiguration」はラテン語、具体的には中世ラテン語の「praefiguratio」から来ており、「prae-」は「前（まえ）」を、「figurare/figura」は「形・かたち」を意味した。
「prefiguration」は中世ラテン語の「praefiguratio」や古フランス語の語形（例:「prefiguracion」）を経て、中英語の「prefiguracioun」となり、現代英語の「prefiguration」に発展した。
もともとは「前もって形作る・表す行為」という意味だったが、時を経て「予示・予告」という意味に広がり、神学では後の現実を予表する『予型』という専門的用法を持つようになった。
