語源
「pre-historic」は接頭辞「pre-」（ラテン語'prae'）「前」を意味する、そして「historic」はギリシャ語の'historia'（後にラテン語'historicus'）「調査・記述（歴史）」に由来する語を結合してできている。
「pre-」と「historic」を結びつけて作られた語で、19世紀頃から「prehistoric」や「pre-historic」の綴りが用いられ、現代では無ハイフンの'prehistoric'が標準的になっている。
