語源
「praxis」は古代ギリシャ語の『πρᾶξις』（prâxis）に由来し、語根の『πράσσειν／πράσσω』は「行う、作用する」を意味した。
『praxis』はラテン語（後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語）でも同形で用いられ、学術的・神学的文献に現れ、英語にはラテン語（およびギリシャ語の影響）から近代初期に借用された。
当初は一般に「行為」や「実行」を意味していたが、次第に「理論の実践的応用」や「慣行」、哲学や医学における専門的用法へと意味が発展した。
