語源
『plasticize』は形容詞『plastic』と動詞化接尾辞『-ize』から英語で作られた語。『plastic』は最終的にギリシャ語の『plastikos』（かたちを作る、成形に適した）に由来する。
『plastic』はフランス語やラテン語を経てギリシャ語『plastikos』（πλαστικός）から英語に入った。動詞化接尾辞『-ize』が近代英語で付されて『plasticize』（19〜20世紀頃成立）になり、『plasticizing』はその現在分詞・動名詞形として用いられるようになった。
元来は『成形する・形を作る』という意味だったが、現代では特に高分子材料の『柔らかくする／可塑剤を加える』という意味で使われることが多い。
