「peristyle」はラテン語の「peristylum」に由来し、接頭辞「peri-」は（ギリシャ語から）「周囲」を意味し、「stylos」は（ギリシャ語で）「柱」を意味した。
「peristyle」はラテン語の「peristylum」から変化し、さらにギリシャ語の「peristȳlon（περίστυλον）」に由来し、最終的に現代英語の「peristyle」になった。
当初は「建物や中庭の周りの列柱」を指しており、この意味は現代でも列柱そのものや列柱に囲まれた中庭を指す意味として保たれている。
