語源
「passione」はイタリア語由来で、もともとはラテン語の 'passio, passionis'（苦しみ・耐えること）に由来する。
『passione』はラテン語'spassio'（受難・苦しみ）から俗ラテン語を経て発展した。古フランス語の'passion'や中英語の'passion'へも形が伝わる一方、イタリア語では'passione'の形が保たれた。
当初は『苦しみ』（特にキリストの受難）を意味したが、次第に『強烈な感情』や『熱意』に意味が広がり、現代では世俗的な『情熱』を意味することが多い。
