「palindrome」はギリシア語「palíndromos」に由来し、「palin-（再び）」＋「drómos（走る・道）」の意。
ギリシア語「palíndromos」からラテン語「palindromus」を経て、フランス語「palindrome」となり、最終的に現代英語「palindrome」になった。
当初は「逆戻りする（再び走る）」の意で、のちに後ろから読んでも同じになる語句を指す語へ特化し、現在では語・句・数・配列などへ意味が広がった。
