語源
「palaeontology」は近代ラテン語・ギリシャ語派生の語で、ギリシャ語の 'palaios'（古い）と 'ont-'（存在を示す 'on, ontos' に由来）、および 'logia'（学問、研究）から成る。
19世紀に新ラテン語の 'palaeontologia' を経て英語に入り、学術用語として定着して現代の『古生物学』という用語になった。
もともとは『古い存在の研究』という文字通りの意味だったが、時間を経て化石や先史時代の生命に焦点を当てる現代の学問分野を指すようになった。
