語源
「orthodromic」は古代ギリシャ語に由来し、特に接頭辞「ortho-」（'orthós'）と語幹「dromos」に由来する。ここで「ortho-」は「まっすぐ／正しい」を意味し、「dromos」は「走る／経路」を意味した。
「orthodromic」はギリシャ語の「orthodromos」からニューラテン語や中世ラテン語の学術語形を経て英語の科学用語として定着した（Greek「orthodromos」→ラテン化された形→現代英語「orthodromic」）。
元々は「まっすぐに走る（経路）」を意味していたが、次第に「正距大円航路に関する」や「（生理学で）正常な方向に伝導する」という意味で用いられるようになった。
