語源
「opium」はラテン語の語「opium」に由来し、さらにギリシャ語の「ὄπιον」（オピオン、意味は「ケシの樹液」）にさかのぼる。
「opium」はギリシャ語の「ὄπιον」からラテン語の「opium」に変わり、中世ラテン語（および古フランス語の影響）を経て現代英語の「opium」になった。
元々は「ケシの樹液（天然のラテックス・樹脂）」を意味していたが、次第に「ケシから得られる麻薬」を意味するようになり、比喩的用法（人々を麻痺させるもの）も生じた。
