語源
「oestrogen」は新ラテン語／ギリシャ語の結合要素に由来し、ギリシャ語の『oistros（刺激、性衝動）』と『-gen（生み出す）』から成る。
『oestrogen』は20世紀初頭に『oestrus（発情）』と接尾辞『-gen』から科学用語として作られ、のちに英語に定着した。米語では後に綴りを短くした『estrogen』が広まった。
当初は『発情を引き起こすもの』を意味したが、時間とともに『女性の性徴や生殖を促進・調節するホルモン類』という現在の意味に変化した。
