『observance』はラテン語の『observantia』に由来し、'observare' は『見守る・保つ』を意味した。接頭辞 'ob-' は『～の方へ』、語根 'servare' は『守る・保つ』を意味する。
『observantia』は古フランス語と中英語で『observance』となり、やがて現代英語の『observance』になった。
