語源
「normless」は英語の合成語で、名詞「norm」と形容詞接尾辞「-less」（「〜がない」）から成る。'norm'は最終的にラテン語の'norma'（定規・規則）に由来する。
「norm」は中世ラテン語・古フランス語（'norma' / 'norme'）を経て英語に入り、'規則'や'基準'を意味するようになった。'less'は古英語の'lēas'（〜がない）に由来し、これらが組み合わさって現代英語の'normless'ができた。
当初「norm」は物理的な定規や規準を指したが、次第に社会的・行動的な基準を意味するようになり、'normless'は『社会的・行動的基準がない』という意味になった。
