語源
「nonreflexive」は英語に由来し、接頭辞「non-」と形容詞「reflexive」から成る。ここで「non-」は「～でない」を意味し、「reflexive」は最終的にラテン語の「reflectere（元に戻す、折り返す）」に由来する。
「reflexive」はラテン語の'reflectere'（re-「後ろへ」＋flectere「曲げる」）に由来し、後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語の'reflexivus'を経て英語の'reflexive'になった。'nonreflexive'は英語で'reflexive'に'non-'を付けて作られた後発の語である。
当初は物理的に『折り返す／戻る』という意味だったが、次第に『自己に向かって戻る／自己参照する』という意味（文法的・比喩的）になった。'nonreflexive'はその否定として『自己に向かわない／自己参照しない』という意味になった。
