「nematode」は新ラテン語（Neo-Latin）'Nematoda'に由来し、ギリシャ語の'nēmatōdēs'（'nēma'＝「糸」、'-ōdēs'＝「〜のような」）に由来する。
語はギリシャ語の形容詞'nēmatōdēs'から新ラテン語'Nematoda'となり、19世紀に分類学用語として英語の'nematode'に採用された。
もともとは「糸のような形」を表していたが、やがて線形動物門に属する小形の動物（線虫）を指す語として定着した。
