語源
『musclemen』は英語に由来し、『muscle』と『man』の合成語である。『muscle』はラテン語『musculus』〈「小さな鼠」〉から、『man』は古英語の『mann』〈「人」〉から来ている。
『muscle』はラテン語『musculus』が古フランス語・中英語を経て英語に入った。これが英語の『man』と結びついて合成名詞『muscleman』が作られ、不規則複数『man』→『men』に従って『musclemen』になった。
もともとは文字通り『筋肉で目立つ人』を指したが、現在ではそのままの意味（筋肉質の男）に加えて、『雇われ用心棒』という比喩的・派生的な意味も持つようになった。
