語源
「multi-」はラテン語の「multus」（「多い」）に由来する接頭辞で、「carriageway」は「carriage（荷車・車）」と「way（道）」の合成語から成る語である。
「carriage」は古ノルマン語・古フランス語の'carriage'、さらにラテン語の'carrus'（車輪付きの乗り物）に由来し、「way」は古英語の'weg'に由来する。19世紀に「carriageway」という語が道路を指す語として現れ、近代になってから複数の車道を示すために「multi-」が付いて「multi-carriageway」となった。
当初は馬車用の道路を意味していたが、時とともに車両用の道路全般を指すようになり、「multi-carriageway」は複数の分離された車道を持つ道路を意味するようになった。
