「monarchism」はギリシャ語（後期ラテン語・古フランス語を経由）に由来し、語幹はギリシャ語の「monos（単一）」と「arkhos（支配者）」を含む「monarkhos」で、接尾辞の「-ismos」（ギリシャ語）が英語の「-ism」となったものである。
