語源
「microcontinent」は現代英語で成立した語で、ギリシャ語接頭辞「micro-（小さい）」とラテン語由来の「continent（continēns：連続している・保持する）」の組み合わせによる。
「continent」はラテン語の 'continēns'（動詞 'continēre' の現在分詞）を経て古フランス語 'continent' として英語に入った。ギリシャ語の接頭辞 'micro-'（'mikros'）が近代英語で結合されて「microcontinent」になった。
当初は文字通り「小さな大陸」を意味したが、次第に完全な大陸ではなく「孤立した大陸地殻の断片」を指す地質学的専門用語として用いられるようになった。
