語源
「mezzotint」はイタリア語の「mezzotinto」から来ており、「mezzo」は「半分」、「tinto」は「着色された（染められた）」を意味した。
「mezzotinto」は17せいきにイタリア語から英語に入ってきて、現代英語で「mezzotint」に適応された。
当初は「ハーフトーン（半色調）」を指す言葉だったが、次第にその技法自体とその技法で作られた版画の両方を指すようになった。
