語源
「matchmaker」は近代英語で「match（適した組み合わせ）」＋「maker（作る人・取り持つ人）」を組み合わせて作られた複合語である。
「match」（適した組み合わせの意）は中英語で『仲間』や『伴侶』を意味するゲルマン系の語から発展し、「matchmaker」はその意味と「maker」を組み合わせて人を取り持つ者を示す語として生じた。
もともと「match」は適した組み合わせや伴侶を指していたが、時間とともに「matchmaker」は主に恋愛・結婚の取り持ちをする人（および広義では組み合わせを取り仕切る者）を意味するようになった。
