語源
（最近）『mala』（香辛の意味）は現代中国語の語『麻辣』（ピンイン 'málà'）に由来し、『麻』は主に痺れを、『辣』は辛さを意味する。一方、（古い）『mala』（念珠の意味）はサンスクリット語の語『mālā』に由来し、『mālā』は『花輪』や『珠の輪（念珠）』を意味した。
『mala』（中国由来の意味）は中華料理の国際的普及に伴い最近英語へ取り入れられた。『mala』（念珠）はサンスクリット語『mālā』から（ヒンディー語等を介して）英語に借用され、祈祷用の珠を指す語として定着した。
中国語の元の語は文字通り『痺れ＋辛さ』を指し、英語でも『麻辣』の味を表す意味としてほぼそのまま受け継がれている。サンスクリットの『mālā』は『花輪／珠の輪』を意味し、その中心的な意味は英語でも維持されている。
