語源
「linguistics」はフランス語の「linguistique」に由来し、語幹の「lingu-」はラテン語の「lingua」（舌・言語）にさかのぼり、接尾辞「-istics」は学問分野を示す。
「linguistics」はフランス語の「linguistique」およびラテン語「lingua」に基づく中世ラテン語的な語形から変化して現代英語の「linguistics」になった。
当初は「舌・言語に関する」といった意味だったが、次第に「言語の科学的研究」を意味するようになった。
