語源
「libertarian」は英語（18世紀後半）に由来し、名詞「liberty」と接尾辞「-arian」から作られた。「liberty」はラテン語の「libertas」（「自由」）に由来する。
「libertarian」は「liberty」（中英語の「liberte」、古仏語の「liberté」）と、ラテン語由来の接尾辞「-arian」（-arius）から英語で発展し、現代の語「libertarian」になった。
当初は「自由の支持者（一般的）」を意味していたが、次第に「国家権力を最小化し個人の自由を広く重視する特定の政治的立場」を指すようになった。
