語源
「launch」は古ノルマン語・中英語を経て、最終的にラテン語系の 'lancea'（槍）に関連する語に由来し、語根は「槍」を指した。
中英語の 'lancen'／'lauch(e)n'（投げること）や古フランス語 'lancier' の影響を受け、元は投げる・発射する意味で使われ、のちに船を進水させる意味などを経て現代英語の 'launch' になった。
当初は「（槍などを）投げる、突き出す」という意味だったが、時間とともに「動かし始める」「打ち上げる」「開始する」といった現在の意味へと広がった。
