「lapsarian」は後期ラテン語の語『lapsarianus』に由来し、語根の「laps-」（ラテン語labi由来）は「落ちる」を意味する。
中世/教会ラテン語の『lapsarius』『lapsarianus』の形を経て、17世紀頃に神学用語として英語に入った。
当初は「落ち（転落）に関する」という一般的な意味だったが、次第に「人類の堕落（原罪）に関する」という神学的な限定的意味に変化した。
