語源
「irrealism」は英語での造語で、接頭辞「ir-」（ラテン語の in- が r の前で同化したもの）と名詞「realism」を組み合わせたものに由来する。ここで「ir-」は「～でない」を意味し、「realism」は最終的に「事物に関する、現実の」という意味のラテン語「realis」から来ている。
「irrealism」は既存の語「realism」に否定の接頭辞「ir-」を付けた近代英語の形成から変化し、現代英語の語「irrealism」になった。
当初は「現実主義でないこと、現実性の欠如」を指したが、次第に美学では夢のような・幻想的な表現を、哲学では特定の反実在論的立場を指す語として用いられるようになった。
