語源
「humanisation」は近代フランス語の語『humanisation』に由来し、語幹『human』（ラテン語の 'humanus' に由来）は「人間」を意味した。
『humanisation』はフランス語を経て英語に入り（ラテン語 'humanus' からの派生を含む）、フランス語の『humaniser／humanisation』の名詞形が英語の『humanisation』（米国綴り 'humanization' を含む）として採用された。
当初は「人間にすること」を意味したが、次第に「より人道的にすること」「（擬人化の意味で）人間的特徴を与えること」、さらに医療などの分野での専門的な意味も含むようになった。
