語源
「heterodactyl」はギリシャ語に由来し、接頭辞の「hetero-」は「異なる」を意味し、「daktulos」は「指・趾」を意味する。後にニューラテン語・英語の学術語として「heterodactylus／heterodactyl」の形で採用された。
「heterodactyl」は19世紀にギリシャ語要素（hetero- + daktulos）から学術（ニューラテン語・英語）用語として作られ、トロゴン類の記述などで用いられるようになり、長い中英語段階を経ずに専門語彙として定着した。
当初は文字どおり「異なる指（趾）を持つ」という意味だったが、特定の鳥類に見られる特有の趾配列を指す専門用語へと発展した。
