語源
『hamstring』は古英語の要素『ham』（膝の裏）と『string』/『streng』（腱）に由来する。
『hamstring』は古英語で『ham』＋『streng』として腱を指す語として現れ、そこから『腱を切る（無力化する）』という動詞の意味が発達し、中英語・現代英語に受け継がれて現在の過去形『hamstrung』がある。
当初は『膝裏の腱』や『その腱を切ること』を意味していたが、次第に『無力化する・著しく制約する』という比喩的な意味が生じた。
