「fantastical」は中世英語の「fantastik」に由来し、「fantasy」は「想像」を意味していた。

「fantastik」は接尾辞「-al」の影響で現代英語の「fantastical」に変化した。

当初は「空想や想像に関する」という意味で、現代でもその意味はほぼ同じである。
