語源
「evangelicalism」はギリシャ語の『euangelion』に由来し、『eu-』は「よい」を、『angelion』は「知らせ・消息」を意味した。これが後にラテン語の『evangelium』などを経て、接尾辞『-ism』（運動や教義を示す）と結びついた語である。
ギリシャ語『euangelion』→ ラテン語『evangelium』→ 中世ラテン語／古フランス語を経て中英語・近代英語の『evangelical』に発展し、18–19世紀に『-ism』の付加で『evangelicalism』として一般化した。
当初は「よい知らせ／福音」を意味していたが、次第に「福音に関する」という意味になり、最終的には「福音の強調（回心・伝道）を中心とした運動や信条」を指すようになった。
