語源
「esoterica」はギリシャ語に由来し、特に語は「esōterikos」（ἐσωτερικός）で、語根の「esō」（ἔσω）は「内側・内部」を意味した。
「esoterica」はネオラテン語・近代ラテン語を経て（中でも複数中性形の「esoterica」など）英語に入り、小さな内部グループ向けの資料・知識という意味を保ってきた。
当初は「内側／内部に属する」という意味だったが、時間を経て『秘匿的・専門的な知識や物事そのもの』を指すようになった。
