「collectible」はラテン語を経て古フランス語・中英語から来ている。語幹はラテン語の動詞『colligere』（過去分詞『collectus』）に由来し、接頭辞『col-』（『com-』の変形）は「一緒に」、『ligare/legere』は「集める・拾う」を意味する。形容詞語尾『-ible』はラテン語の『-ibilis』（～できる）に由来する。
