『erythroplastic』は近代医学語（新ラテン語／英語）に由来し、ギリシャ語要素の「erythros（赤）」と「plastikos（形成されうる）」から成る。
『erythroplastic』はギリシャ語の語根を結合して新ラテン語的に近代英語で造られた語で、古英語や中英語を経た形ではない。
当初は文字通り「赤を形成する」の意味で作られたが、医学分野では「赤血球形成に関する」や「erythroplasiaに関連する／それに似た」の意味で用いられるようになった。
