語源
「epithetical」はギリシャ語の「epitheton」に由来し、接頭辞の「epi-」は「上に・付着して」を意味し、語根の「tithenai」は「置く」を意味する。英語の形容詞は「epithet」に接尾辞「-ical」が付いたもの。
「epithetical」は、ギリシャ語の「epitheton」からラテン語・古フランス語を経て名詞「epithet」となり、そこに形容詞接尾辞「-ical」が付いて英語の形容詞として成立した。
元は名前や用語に「付け加えられたもの（付着した記述）」を指していたが、次第に記述的・限定的な語（epithet）や、そうした語を用いる話法（しばしば侮蔑的な含みを持つ）を指すようになった。
