語源
「elide」はラテン語の『elidere』に由来し、接頭辞の『e-』は「外へ」を、動詞『laedere』は「打つ・害する」を意味した。
『elide』はラテン語の『elidere』（「打ち消す」の意）から変化し、15世紀後半に英語に入り、打ち消す・削除するという意味で使われ、のちに発話や文章での省略の意味に重点が移った。
当初は「打ち消す・打ち破る」を意味していたが、時間とともに「（特に発話で）省略する・抜かす」という現在の意味に発展した。
