語源
「elephantiasis」はギリシャ語の「ἐλεφαντίασις」（象皮症）に由来し、もとになる語は「ἐλέφας」（象）で、接尾辞「-iasis」は「病気・状態」を意味した。
「elephantiasis」はラテン語（後期ラテン語・中世ラテン語）の形「elephantiasis」を経て、中英語を通じて現代英語に入った。
当初は文字通り「象のような状態」を意味していたが、次第にリンパ遮断による重度の局所的腫脹（主にフィラリア感染による）を指す医学用語へと変化した。
