語源
「downwind」は英語に由来し、語は『down』と『wind』の結合から成り、『down』は『より低い所へ』、『wind』は『動く空気』を意味した。
『down』は古英語の「dūn」から、『wind』は古英語の「wind」から来ており、複合語は中英語（例:「down-wynde」）として現れ、その後現代英語の『downwind』に発展した。
当初は文字通り『風の吹く方向へ』という意味の結合語だったが、現代でもほぼ同じ意味で使われている。
