語源
「downstream」は英語起源で、古英語の「dūn」（後に「down」）と古英語の「stream」を組み合わせた語で、「dūn/down」は「高い位置から低い位置へ」を、「stream」は「流れ（川の流れ）」を意味した。
古英語の「down（dūn）」と「stream（stream）」が中英語期に合成されて「downstream」となり、流れの方向や下流側を表す語として用いられてきた。
当初は文字通り「川や小川の下流にある／下流へ向かう」という意味だったが、次第に比喩的に「工程や過程の後半・後続段階」を意味する用法も発達した。
