語源
「disjunctive」はラテン語に由来し、特に後期ラテン語の語『disiunctivus』に由来する。接頭辞『dis-』は「離れて」を意味し、語根『iungere』（『iunct-』を経る）は「つなぐ」を意味した。
『disjunctive』は後期ラテン語『disiunctivus』から変化し、17世紀の初期近代英語で現在の形 'disjunctive' として取り入れられた。特定の古フランス語形を経ないでラテン語要素に基づいて形成された。
当初は「分ける・分離するもの」を意味していたが、時間とともに文法や論理での専門的な用法、つまり「選択（または）を示すもの」の意味へと発展した。
