語源
'diastereomer'はギリシャ語の要素に由来し、具体的には'dia-'＋'stereos'＋'isomeros'から来ている。'dia-'は「離れて」、'stereos'は「立体・固い」、'isomeros'（'isos'＋'meros'）は「等しい部分」を意味した。
'diastereomer'は19～20世紀の化学文献で用いられた'diastereoisomer'やドイツ語の'Diastereomer'といった関連語形を経て、現代英語の'diastereomer'となった。
当初は「鏡像でない配列の異性体」を指したが、その専門的意味は現代でもほぼ同じである。
