語源
「diaphragm」はギリシャ語の『διάφραγμα』(『diaphragma』)に由来し、『dia-』は「通る／を通して」、『phragma』は「柵・仕切り」を意味した。
『diaphragma』は後期ラテン語の『diaphragma』を経て学術的借用として中英語に入り、最終的に現代英語の『diaphragm』になった。
元は「仕切り・隔てるもの」を意味していたが、次第に解剖学的な筋性の仕切りや機器の薄い膜、避妊具などの意味へと発展した。
