語源
「deviance」はフランス語の「déviance」（dévier「それる」から）に由来し、さらにラテン語の「deviare」（de-「離れて」＋via「道」）にさかのぼる。
ラテン語の「deviare」がフランス語の形（dévierなど）を経て、英語では形容詞deviantを経由して20世紀初頭に名詞devianceが形成された。
元来は「道から外れる／それる」という文字通りの意味だったが、次第に「規範からの逸脱」や「社会的な逸脱行動」の意味へ変化した。
