語源
「demythologize」は英語に由来し、接頭辞「de-」（ラテン語の「de-」で「取り除く」や「逆にする」）と「mythologize」（「mythology」＋「-ize」）から形成されている。
「demythologize」はギリシャ語の「mythos」（物語・神話）と「logos」（言葉・理性）に由来する「mythologize」から発展し、除去を示す英語の接頭辞「de-」が付いてできた。形容詞・過去分詞形の「demythologized」は動詞の規則的な過去分詞形への変化である。
当初は一般的に「神話的地位を取り除く」という意味で使われていたが、20世紀の学術（特に神学）で「神話的言語を実存的に再解釈する」という特化した意味を帯びるようになり、現在は一般的用法と専門的用法の両方が使われている。
