語源
「death-watch」は英語に由来し、『death（死）』＋『watch（見張り・見守りの期間）』の合成語である。
『death-watch』は当初、臨終のそばで見守る行為を指す語としてEarly Modern Englishで用いられ、その後17～18世紀ごろに、見張りの夜に聞かれるカチカチという音を立てる甲虫にちなんで甲虫の名にも用いられるようになった。
元来は『臨終のそばで見守ること』を意味したが、やがて甲虫（とその音）を指す意味も持つようになった。
