「deathwatch」は英語に由来する語で、'death'（古英語 'dēaþ'）と 'watch'（古英語 'wæcce'／'wæccan'）という単語の複合語である。
中英語期に 'dethwacche' のような綴りで現れ、'death'（死）と 'watch'（見張り・見守り）を結び付けた語として現代英語の 'deathwatch' に発展した。
もともとは主に臨終のそばに付き添う見守りを指したが、木材内の甲虫のトントンという音が死の前兆と結び付けられてその甲虫にも用いられるようになり、さらに比喩的な「終わりを待つ」意味も派生した。
