語源
『counter-』はラテン語の『contra』（語源は古フランス語を経由）に由来し「反対・対抗」を意味し、'charge'は古フランス語の 'chargier'（積む・負わせる）に由来し、後に「（責任を）負わせる、非難する」の意味で用いられるようになった。
『counter-』と 'charge' が英語で結合して 'countercharge' が形成され、18–19世紀ごろ軍事的な反撃を指す語として使われ始め、のちに法的・政治的な反訴・反論の意味にも拡大した。
当初は主に物理的・軍事的な「返しの突撃」を指したが、やがて「返しの非難（反訴・反論）」という比喩的な意味へと広がった。
