語源
「classicism」はフランス語の'classicisme'に由来し、'classique'（ラテン語'classicus'から）は「第一級に属する、またはある階級に関する」という意味だった。
『classicism』はフランス語の『classicisme』から変化し、さらにラテン語の『classicus』（『classis』＝「区分・階級」）に由来し、近代フランス語を経て英語に入った。
当初は「第一級や最高の階級に属すること」を意味していたが、時を経て「古典古代の模範や原則への芸術的な忠実さ」という現在の意味に発展した。
