「churchwarden」は中英語の語「chirchewardene」に由来し、'church'は「教会」、'warden'は「守る人・管理人」を意味した。
中英語の「chirchewardene」は、古英語の'cirice'（教会）や'weard'（守護者）などの語要素から形成され、最終的に現代英語の「churchwarden」になった。
